Learning in Action: A Caregiver’s Journey with Guide Path
“My experience with Guide Path modules learnt so far has largely been positive.
The knowledge I have gained so far has been valuable and very significant in my everyday relationship with not only the elderly but with everyone in general. I have been able to understand the senior living ecosystem and its benefits. For instance, I have learnt that taking care of the aging of the home as the case of Nigeria will require patience, understanding in making sure that both the quality and quantity of care is given to them. Knowing that what you want for them may not be what they want for themselves and considering the individual, I will have to find a way to balance what I want and what I know they need. Here my approach and presentation will now determine whether they will accept my opinion or not. More so, making sure that wherever they are kept is more like their individual home than a centre.
Meanwhile, this course has also gone as far as making me as an individual to cultivate deeper understanding about what people feel and think which enables one to put up more realistic expectations. Lastly I have understood the need for compassionate communication such as – feeling, empathy and fact-based language, especially fact based language where I will have made them understand me as clearly as possible without being judgemental or having some assumptions which are of no importance.”
