Every senior living leader has sat through training that didn’t change anything. Not because the content was wrong, but because nothing happened after the session ended.
Guide Path 2.0’s Leadership Series is built around a different premise: a training session is only half the intervention. The other half is a conversation that has to happen afterward — on the floor, with the team that didn’t attend the session but still has to live inside its implications.
Conversation One: What Gets Said in the Room
The first conversation is the one that gets recorded. A leader and a specialist walk through the mechanics of a hard subject: transitions in care with Erin Thompson, Validation with Vicki de Klerk-Rubin, culturally competent dementia care with SAGEcare’s Sadiya Abjani.
These sessions work because they refuse to stay at the level of philosophy. They name the specific moment a team gets stuck. Erin Thompson doesn’t talk about “change management” in the abstract; she talks about the difference between change, which is situational, and transition, which is personal — and why a team that treats the two the same keeps missing what a family actually needs.
That specificity is deliberate. A leader can watch the session once and repeat the distinction to a charge nurse in thirty seconds. That portability is the test every Leadership Series session has to pass before it airs.
Conversation Two: What Happens When the Camera Turns Off
The second conversation almost never gets recorded, and it is the one that decides whether the first one mattered.
It happens when a director of nursing watches a session, then sits down with a team lead and says: here is what we are doing differently starting this week. It happens when an administrator uses a Validation principle in a hard family meeting for the first time — badly — and talks it through with a colleague afterward instead of quietly deciding the approach doesn’t work. It happens when a team debriefs a resident encounter using language from a forty-minute video instead of falling back on the habits that were already failing them.
Most senior living training doesn’t survive this second conversation because most training doesn’t anticipate that it needs to happen. A session ends, a certificate gets filed, and the team returns to whatever it was doing before. Nothing in the design makes room for the conversation that would carry it into practice.
Why Guide Path 2.0 Is Built Around Both
The Leadership Series is a complementary learning resource — not a substitute for the accredited Certification Program, and not a version of it. It exists because senior living leaders often need a way into a hard subject before they are ready for a structured, multi-module commitment. What the Leadership Series can do, if it is built well, is set up the second conversation deliberately: give a leader language specific enough to use immediately, framed around a real moment instead of a general principle.
That is why each session is built around a named tension rather than a broad topic. Transitions in Care isn’t “communication skills” — it’s the gap between what changes on paper and what a resident experiences as loss. Validation isn’t “dementia care awareness” — it’s a technique for meeting someone in the reality they are in rather than correcting them out of it. LGBTQ+ dementia care with SAGEcare isn’t “diversity training” — it’s the specific history an LGBTQ+ older adult carries into a care relationship, and what that history changes about disclosure, identity, and chosen family.
What This Means for the Next Round
Guide Path is continuing to build the Leadership Series around new subject areas, applying the same methodology rather than expanding into unrelated territory. The test for what comes next is the test every session already has to pass: can a leader use it in a real conversation within a week of watching it.
If your team has watched a session, the more useful next step isn’t necessarily another session. It’s asking whether the second conversation happened yet — and if it didn’t, having it this week.
